2008 -- We will be open for our
regular hours (11:00 - 5:00) on
this day. The weather is
forecast to be gorgeous -- a
high of 80 degrees -- not bad
for July in Missouri! Visit the
winery for a pleasant country
outing before finding a good
place to watch the fireworks at
night!
- July 5 - 2nd Annual Missouri
Wine Festival, The Elms Resort,
Excelsior Springs, noon to 9
p.m. Missouri wine, art, crafts
and music. We will be offering
samples and sales of four of our
wines at this event. Tickets
$15 in advance or $20 at the
door. Music includes David
Knopf, The Cowtown Playboys, The
Great White Possum String
Company and Little Rachel.
Wineries include Riverwood
Winery, Baltimore Bend Vineyard,
Indian Creek Winery, Jowler
Creek, Mount Pleasant Winery and
Terre Beau Vineyard. For more
information contact
816-630-7467 or visit
the Wine Festival Website.
Our winery will also be open
for regular hours on this day --
11:00 - 5:00. If you can't
make it to Excelsior Springs
come on out to the winery!
- Saturday, July 12, Live
Music on the Lawn, Jeff Lux,
noon to 4 p.m., Free! Our good
friend and wonderful musician
and entertainer Jeff Lux will
perform again at the winery.
He'll be outside under the arbor
if the weather is nice, and
he'll be inside in the cool air
conditioned auditorium if the
weather is bad. Great
summertime music! For more
information visit
Jeff's website.
- Sunday, July 20, Classy
Campfire Cooking, 1:30 - 3:30.
Spend a relaxing Sunday
afternoon under the shaded arbor
at Riverwood Winery and watch as
the chefs from apt9 kitchens
show us how to add class to our
next camping trip or backyard
barbecue. Much better than
franks or beans!
You will get to watch the chefs
prepare a flame-kissed meal at
the outdoor firepit and you will
get to sample the results along
with Riverwood wines specially
selected by the apt9 chefs!
This will be an outdoor event
near the firepit, but of course
there is nothing like the smell
of woodsmoke from a campfire in
the summertime! If the weather
is bad we will move into the
auditorium (and the chefs can
prepare the food outside).
Reservations required. Please
call (816
579 9797) or e-mail (owner@riverwoodwinery.com)
to confirm your registration, or
print out the registration form
below and fax it in to us (816
579 9588). Last day to
register: July 16. Cost
$20 plus tax. (Includes food
samples, one full glass of wine
at the beginning of the class
and three-ounce pours of the
wines selected by the chefs to
pair with the food. Additional
wine or beer can be purchased
during the class.) For
information on apt9 kitchens
visit
their website.

to 4:00 p.m., Free! We will be
offering tastings in our

available for sale by the bottle
or the case and we can take
special orders as well. Of
course, while you are at the
winery, we encourage you to do a
tasting of Riverwood Wines as
well!

Other News and Upcoming Events to Watch
For!
-
Fresh-picked Apricots --
It's hard to beat a fresh-picked
apricot as a refreshing snack or
to make an elegant desert! We
have a bumper crop on our trees
this year. We apply no sprays
to these trees. The fruit is
about as fresh, clean and local
as you can get! The apricots are
just about ripe, and we hope to
have some available for sale at
the winery this July 4th
weekend.

Green Dirt Farm Releases Its
Farmstead Cheese, July
27, 2008, 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Green
Dirt Farm, located just several
miles from our farm and
vineyards, will be celebrating
the
Kansas City area's first
farmstead sheep's milk cheese
production. Green Dirt Farm
uses milk from their own
pastured ewes to handcraft an
old-world style ricotta using
whey, a fresh sheep's milk
cheese and a bloomy rind aged
cheese. We had planned on
pouring our wines at this event
but will be unable to do so due
to a scheduling conflict.
Along with cheeses and wines,
Green Dirt Farm will be sampling
their 100% grass-fed lamb.
Weston's own Vineyard's
Restaurant will be catering this
event using Green Dirt Farm's
artisanal cheeses and grass-fed
lamb along with other fresh,
seasonal vegetables grown by
local farmers. This open house
is by invitation only. If you
would like a special invitation,
please email Jana at
jana@greendirtfarm.com or
visit their website at www.greendirtfarm.com
to sign up for their
newsletter.

HIKING
and BIRDING NEAR THE WINERY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For those of you who like to hike and watch birds and wildlife,
there are some outstanding areas very near the Winery. Missouri has some of the best State Parks and Conservation areas
in the country, and several of those are very near the Winery.
Kansas, too, has some wonderful opportunities for hiking. After
a hike at one of these fine areas, stop by the Winery for some
wine and a picnic by the fire. Here are some of the areas you
may consider for excellent hiking and bird-watching
opportunities:
-
Little Bean Marsh
Natural Area -- This area, only two miles north of
the Winery off Highway 45, is a 186-acre portion of the
427-acre Little Bean Marsh Conservation Area. It is a
natural marsh along the Missouri River with a slough and
bottomland forest in the old Missouri floodplain. The area
is a wintering site for bald eagles and several kinds of
hawks. Waterfowl and other marsh birds visit the area
during migration. There are two paved trails for hiking.
One trail is 0.5 miles long and leads to a viewing platform
overlooking the freshwater marsh. The other trail is 200
yards long and leads to a viewing blind overlooking
Cottonwood Slough.
-
Bluffwoods Conservation
Area -- This area is about 15 miles north of the
Winery, or nine miles south of St. Joseph off Highway 59
(Highway 45 runs into Highway 59 at the exit to Atchison).
The area encompasses almost 2,400 acres of rugged, sometimes
very steep loess hill bluff land. It is comprised primarily
of a diverse mix of upland oak-hickory forest and woodland,
with a small amount of grassland and native prairie. Over
100 woodland species of wildlife can be found in the area.
In addition, the area has been designated by Audubon
Missouri as an "Important Bird Area", which means it is
deemed most crucial for bird populations, due to the
abundance of birds and/or the diversity of birds present.
The area has seven trails of varying length and difficulty,
several of which offer scenic overlooks of the Missouri
River floodplain looking west into Kansas.
-
Benedictine Bottoms
Wildlife Area -- This 2,112 acre wildlife area is in
the floodplain of the Missouri River just below Benedictine
College in Atchison, Kansas. It is approximately 10 miles
from the Winery. It is managed for native grasslands,
timber and wetlands. The area has a wide variety of
wildlife, and many species of songbirds can be seen in the
area throughout the year. Shorebirds, wading birds and
waterfowl use the wetlands. Unfortunately, access is
limited to the area from October 1 through March 31. It is
open to the public from April 1 through September 30.
-
Weston Bend State Park
-- This 1,133 acre park is only ten miles south of the
Winery on Highway 45. The park is a mix of old fields,
bottomland forests, woodlands and wetlands. At least 179
bird species are found within the park and in the
surrounding Missouri River valley. The park has a variety
of paved, mowed, and dirt trails, many with beautiful and
interesting views of the Missouri River and Kansas and Fort
Leavenworth to the west.
