Our VineyardsWe have vineyards both off-site and in front of the Winery. The off-site vineyards are located at our farm in the beautiful Missouri River bluffs north of the Snow Creek Ski Area. Although we didn't know it at the time we purchased the farm, those vines were already in the ground. Someone had pulled the trellis posts from the vineyards, presumably to be used for fence posts, and left the trellis wires on the ground. The fields had not been tended in several years and the ground was overgrown and brushy. As we began to clear the ground in preparation for mowing we discovered the trellis wires. We then spent two winters rolling up wires, which we had to do before we could mow. Finally we rolled up all the wires and were able to mow. That spring, grape vines began to sprout up all in a row! We decided at that time that we should try to renovate those vineyards. Twelve years later and we're still working on it! We have been able to renovate vineyards containing several varieties of French hybrids and the native red Norton/Cynthiana. Several other acres of vineyards we have had to give up on. We plan to plant several additional acres in the near future. In the Spring of 2006, we planted Cayuga White and Concord grape varieties in a demonstration plot in front of the Winery. When you visit the Winery you can wander through the vines to see how the grapes grow. If the grapes are ripe you can see how they taste! We don't use sprays on the grapes so you have no worries! It will be several years before these grapes begin to produce fully. The Easter freeze of 2007 didn't help them at all. Indeed we lost several of the vines to the freeze. |
