10 Year Anniversary
Riverwood Winery's 10th Anniversary!
Ten years ago this month, February, 2007, Ginah and I put out the "open" sign on the winery door. We were so nervous! Things started out slowly. Our first visit that day, a Friday, was from our good neighbor Tim who purchased a bottle of Blackberry wine -- our only sale that day. That Sunday (Super Bowl Sunday) was no better. Only one visitor and he arrived fifteen minutes before closing time and was in a mood to chat (obviously not a football fan)! We have since found that Super Bowl Sunday may be a good day for sports bars, but not so good for wineries (at least not ours)!
We faced some interesting challenges over those ten years. Shortly after our opening, for example, the economy collapsed and we entered into the "Great Recession" -- no problem, a perfect time to start a business! After that the Highway Department closed the primary highway route to our winery for many months for bridge replacement work -- we brushed it off! Then the unprecedented release of massive amounts of snow-melt from upstream reservoirs in northern states along the Missouri River resulted in a devastating months-long flood for Missouri. Although our winery building was unaffected by the flood, once again Highway 45 was closed for many months -- knocked the wind out of us, that's all! There will be more challenges ahead, no doubt, but that's OK. The great pleasure of meeting you all, talking about wine with you, enjoying great live music, fun food events, live theater, and having educational and interesting experiences is what counts and makes it meaningful!
We look forward to the months and years ahead. We'll have various activities and offerings to commemorate our anniversary, and we have some exciting new developments in the works. In the next few months we'll begin construction of a new building for wine and grape processing so we can increase our production and begin broader distribution at retail shops and online. We'll renovate our current production area to make a charming and comfortable space for formal wine/whiskey/beer tastings, food & wine pairing events, private events, parties and the like. We are working with designers to come up with fresh new wine labels to be ready soon. A wine club and a whiskey club are on the way, and we look forward to adding to our excellent selection of interesting bourbon and whiskies from around the world.
It's because of you that we're still here! We truly appreciate it! Thank you so much!
We hope to see you soon.
